Calder-
Geography-pg.16."The boat made its lazy way around the southern tipof Awaji Island and up its eastern coast, past the straits of Kii, which is the gateway to the great ocean." This is telling me where the boat is going and where it leads.

Economics-pg 20."You! Move along boy!A face like yours is bad for business." This is showing that they need the money very much there because there are prostitutes walking along the streets.l

Religon and Philosophy-pg 21."He passed a temple and considered asking refuge for the night, but the gates seemed high." Muna is thinking that if the gates seem high that the priest living there might be of higher importance and it may be rude to ask for refuge for the night.

Knowledge, Education, and the Arts-pg 20. "It was lacquered black, with flowers and buterflies engraved in gold leaf" This showes the beaty and intrcate desighns that they would put in to a very high standard person who would be riding in the carrage.
Political science-pg 19. "For a moment he could almost imagine that behind the closed blinds set a magnificent samuri going to visit Lord Kiyomori, chief of the Heike clan in his Rokuhara mansion." This showes that the Lords and high people were very highly respected in Japan.

Sociology- pg 21."The old man shoved him in to the house."Akiko, we have a guest for supper", he called." This showes that little or many people can live in a house and make a living all by themselves.

History-pg 23." As he neared it, he realized that the gray forms at the base of the colomns were human. They were beggars who knew no other home." This showes that over time people have become pooror and have had to sleep outdoors.

Meredith-
Geography-Under a tree 3 girls were dancing to the delight of a small crowd. This is geography because it says that there aren’t many trees in the city. p.24
Economics- A women was watching the woman roasting meat on spits over a charcoal brazier. In this sentence the meat is being cooked over a small stove and that is how it was sold at the market. p. 25
Religion and Philosophy- “he turned the small silver Buddha over in his hands.”
This is showing that the Buddha was worshipped in those days. p.27
Knowledge, Education and the Arts-“There were itinerant musicians to be seen.” In this sentence the music is an art so there was art at the market. p.24
Political Science- “Lord Kiyomori of the Heike is the greatest samurai in Japan,” When Muna says this it shows that Lord Kiyomori is a powerful samurai and is well respected in the politics. p.33
Sociology- the merchants were poorly clad, and there merchandise was for the most part inferior. In this sentence it shows that at this market things are very poor. p.24
History- But to Muna, who had known only the destitute life of a serf, they seemed quite grand. This shows that the serfs were very poor and gave most of there life to the daimyo. p.24


Natalie-


Geography- "In Awa there was a grove of pines along the shore. The wind off the sea had twisted the ancient trunks and limbs, so that they bent grotesquely against the strength of it, their roots like gnarled fingers holding tenaciously to the rocks." This shows that parts of Japan are wooded. Japan is also near a lot of seas that bring strong wind.

Economics- "He fingered the padded cover. It was a course, cheaply dyed material, but to Muna it seemed very grand." This shows that there are different qualities of materials and that they cost different amounts.

LEA- "Some of the long swords hung in scabbards, richly ornamented with jeweled birds and flowers." This shows that some samurai swords are very detailed and creative in Japan.

Political Science- " But he stuttered and blushed as he heard himself asking if the soldier might know a high-ranked Heike who had served General Kiyomori fourteen years ago in Awa." This shows that some samurai in Japan can be higher ranked than others and that all samurai's work for a Daimyo.

Sociology- "Yoshimoto was chief the Genji clan and thus Kiyomori's prime rival for power." This shows that Yoshimoto competing with Kiyomori to be the strongest Daimyo or the Shogun.
